| Rise beyond the limits This is my first planted aquarium with Elos products. How did I start? Simple: with 2 bags of 5L each of ELOS Terra sand (small grain), some schist rocks and a few plants. The first step when we setting up an aquarium is choosing the kind of layout. It is not easy because you have different types of planted tanks like: Nature, Iwagumi, Dutch, Biotope... etc. For this aquarium, I decided to create a mixture of Nature and Iwagumi. I used rocks for decoration and two kinds of plants: Glossostigma elatinoides for the bottom and to compose the spaces between the rocks, I used Blyxa japónica. The secret when you setup the aquarium is to distribute the rocks as good as possible, giving the aquarium the depth and contrast. The rock work needs to be in harmony so it can feel natural. If you fail to provide a good positioning on some rocks, you can hide it later when the flora takes place. When you setup the aquarium, it is better to provide all the necessary arrangements and adjustments so you don´t have to change them later! Be patient and work the rocks for a while until you find the best position. After that, you may start planting. The result after setup! Sorry but I don't have pictures of Step by Step of this aquarium. Aquarium SetupName: Rise beyond the limits Setup Date: 30.09.2005 Size: 56*35*30 (57L) Heater: 50w Temperature: 26? Filtration: Aquaclear 18-76L/h Substrate: Elos Terra 10L Small grain Light: Home made T8 2 x 15w (6500k e 10000k) + 2 x 18w PC 6500k Co2: Home made Bottle 1L with Eheim reactor (later replaced by ATO-10) Fish: Poecilia reticulata and Otocinclus affinis Invertebrate: neocaridina denticulata sinensis Plants: Glossostigma elatinoides and Blyxa japónica Hardscape: schist rocks After 1 Week:In this picture, I tried to simulate a sunrise. I have used a yellow coloured lamp on the top of the aquarium, reflected on the wall. It give us a nice effect, like a nature Postcard. After 2 Weeks:During this 2 weeks, I didn't fertilise the aquarium. I only did once a week water change of 20%. It was enough for replacing all the nutrients of the water and remove the excess. It is visible the quick growth of Glossostigma elatinoides. See how easy she spreads, filling the bottom of the aquarium. After 3 Weeks:After 1 Month:The maintenance was the same, once a week water change of 20%. Take a look at Glossostigma elatinoides. In one month, she covered the entire bottom. After 5 Weeks:I think that yellow background can be fun for a while, but it is not that much natural. So, I replaced the yellow coloured lamp for a white and the result is more interesting. It gives a more depth and natural look to the aquarium. After 6 Weeks:Final pictures (After 7 weeks)

| Hi, Thanks for the comments and compliments! I know that both of you are ELOS Reef addicted and they're always looking for corals and clownfish but there are another world called Aquascaping. Plants... plants and more plants!!!!

| I have gone through your blog and have spent considerable time learning all I can (there is almost as much to learn about planted tanks as there is about reefing)... and at the risk of angering the reefing gods, I spoke to Jesse about a freshwater system70 in color cyan I have a question, do you use the under gravel heating cable system...is it necessary? | |

| I think that a reef is more complex than a planted tank. The major problem is always the hardscape, plant choice and give the depth enough to scale it in proportion. That is the big difference between a planted tank and a tank with plants. About heating cable, in this setup I didn't use it, its too small to use the cord!! In my old layouts (240L+) I did use it and with excellent results. It promotes the plant growing and don't let the gravel cold. In my opinion it will be more useful on systems 120 or bigger. The cord is so long, that on system 70 you will have some space problem to install it | |
